Description

Sodium nitrite is a white solid that is soluble in water and hygroscopic. It is also slowly oxidized by oxygen in the air to sodium nitrate. It is a strong oxidizing agent. Uses: A color fixative and preservative in meats and fish, in the manufacture of diazo dyes, nitroso compounds, and other organic compounds, in dyeing and printing textile fabrics and bleaching fibers, in photography, as a laboratory reagent and corrosion inhibitor, in metal coatings, in the manufacture of rubber chemicals, and in human and veterinary medicine as a vasodilator, bronchodilator, and an antidote for cyanide poisoning.
